Jinjer gear up for their South African Tour

Late last year Turning Tricks announced that Ukrainian metal machine Jinjer’s South African Tour. Bringing their mix of prog metalcore, djent, hardcore, death and groove metal to our sunny shores. With feisty growls and soul-shattering vocals, front-woman Tatiana Shmailyuk is backed by one of the tightest bands around. We caught up with bassist Eugene Abdukhanov to chat about the upcoming tour.

Welcome to Recording Studios. Is this your first visit to our part of the world?

Exactly, our drummer Vlad and the sound engineer Alex have previously been in Egypt as tourists, but I don’t think it can be compared to South Africa. We are super excited about this.

What are your expectations about how it will be…the country and the fans?

This is going to be awesome in all the respects, I am sure. We know Ohgod band, they supported us in Europe, and they are an awesome band and awesome people, so good, that I am sure all South Africans are same cool!

Any vital items you feel you’ll need to pack for a trip to Africa?

I always take same stuff with me on tour – socks, underpants, t-shirts, and I don’t know why this trip should be different

Released earlier this year, your EP Micro. What has the band gained/learned since releasing Micro? Any special or new experiences?

First of all we proved that the band should evolve with every single new record and never get stuck at one place. And we taught the fans that JINJER will always move forward.

Without a thriving metal scene in the Ukraine, how did you guys keep that dream alive, to play heavy metal music, and to see you through to where you are now?

Well, we never wanted to be locked inside Ukraine as a band nor as people. And after the war broke out that was only music to feed us literally and it saved us! It gave us a chance to make a living (of course it was very very hard) doing what we love!

Tatiana your make-up style is so fabulous. Can you give us your tip for the creating the perfect winged eyeliner?

Thank you for the complement! First of all, one should have a steady hand of course. As I’ve been drawing for many years, it is quite easy for me to make a straight line). And i started putting eyeliner when I was 13, so practice makes things perfect. Plus, there are a bunch of tricks in making your eyeliner flawless, such as putting a strip of duct tape in the outer corner of an eye so you can have sort of stensil for a nice neat wing. YouTube can really help in searching for a good makeup tutorial, if you are a beginner. So basically there’s nothing impossible).

A long trip this one to deep dark Africa – what will you be listening to on your playlist?

My playlist doesn’t really change often and mostly consists of same old favorites which are Amy Winehouse, Pink, No Doubt, Opeth, Gojira, Lamb of God and the others.

Be prepared for two crazy shows! Cause we will be. Peace, Love and Harmony!

Lastly – can you give a shout out message to your very excited Saffa fans.
