Wandile Mbambeni recently releases his new EP, Maturation. The man is is well-known for his signature story-telling of the songs he writes whilst creating a deep listening atmosphere. The EP comes after the release of his previous offerings, ‘HomeGrown EP’ and his acoustic album, ‘Good Intentions’. Recording Studios caught up with the man to find out more.
Hi Wandile, thanks for chatting to us today. So, tell us about Maturation
Maturation is the art in maturity. My career kicked as a Singer/Songwriter now I’m a Producer as well. This is my first project where I was in the hot seat designing what I want to hear. A singing, songwriting, performing producer, haha. Growth.
You split up the recording of this EP over three different studios. Why?
At the time I started writing Maturation I was independent and didn’t have budget. I used what I had, most of the magic made was in the bedroom studios.
What unique attribute did each of these different studios provide?
Each studio it’s own sort of energy and interpretation of my production. I loved the organic feel I got from the bedroom setups.
The people 🙂 I was still discovering this music thing and they loved my music, it is a highlight in my career
What is your process in the studio and how long did it take you?
My process changes depending on what I am doing that day. Recording, writing, mixing are all different and I approach them all differently. The EP took me a year and 2 months to be done 100% and completely happy 🙂
You wrote the music for Maturation on software. When you had a band record it later did it sound like you had envisioned?
Yes it did in someway, the band are absolutely amazing. They deserve huge credit 🙂 Maybe I’ll release some of the software content someday.

Your HomeGrown EP got you booked on a German tour. How did that come about?
That was a lot of couch-surfing, busking, selling copies off hand, packed up venues and a lot of snow. That came about me organizing my own personal tour with European friends, I took out a loan and bounced.
We love that story! 🙂
What was your favourite thing about that tour?
The people 🙂 I was still discovering this music thing and they loved my music, it is a highlight in my career.
What are you listening to on your MP3 player / phone right now?
J Dilla – Donuts, D-Angelo – Brown Sugar, Erykah Badu – Baduizm & Mama’s Gun, Charlotte Day WIlson – CDW EP, Samthing Soweto – Kwamampela, Nathi Mankayi.
Each studio it’s own sort of energy and interpretation of my production. I loved the organic feel i got from the bedroom setups
If you could choose to record at any one major studio in the world where would it be and why?
Abbey Roads, the fact that I know it is amazing and I haven’t experienced it. I need to experience it.
Where can fans get hold of the EP?
It is on all online digital platforms, at smarturl.it/MaturationEP.
