Next month the fourth annual BLOOD BROTHERS returns to the stage with the common goal of rock ’n rolling against cancer. Four years running and still rocking harder than ever, the line-up for this year has been meticulously selected, with old favourites being joined by some of the country’s most exciting, young songwriters and performers. We decided to delve into this bloody mess, getting some blood on our hands as we chatted to a few members of the BB crew, starting off with Jason Oosthuizen.
You recently launched your own signature snare drum range (J.O Drums). Can you tell us a bit about that, and how it came about?
I am a huge collector of drums and snare drums in particular. I decided to make a once off snare for myself to which the end product was so next level that I just had to share them with other drummers. There are 30 of my signature snares available called J.O Drums and I have just launched a Bass Drum Beater along with a Hi Hat Clutch leading up to my first full kit coming out later in the year.
What are the unique challenges in playing with such a big band?
To be honest I don’t really find it that challenging but rather more fun to have such a good vibe with all my friends on stage at the same time.

Have you had your first rehearsal yet, how did it go?
We have had a few rehearsals and things are sounding good. Everyone has their own style and feel, so it’s just a case of finding the groove and going with it.
You also have your finger in the coffee business with your Ooth coffee range. Obviously a big coffee lover then. How nice a person would you rate yourself before having your first cup of coffee for the day?
Haha, yes I have Oooth Coffee which still needs to launch but the sales are going too fast for me to even plan a launch. Regarding me before having my first cup of coffee, well I think I’m always a grumpy old man (It’s lekker to moan, you know).
Having played in lots of different bands, and with a variety of projects on the go…what is Jason most excited about in life right now?
There are quite a few things that keep me sleepless at night, but there are so many things that make me excited to get out of bed in the morning. I’m launching my solo album called ‘Oooth’ in October. I have three awesome Tribute shows running at theaters countrywide – being my Led Zeppelin, Guns ‘n Roses & Friends and my ACDC vs Deep Purple shows. I have also launched Oooth Clothing and Oooth Coffee which is quite a handful. Lastly, but definitely not least, I have the J.O Drums which are really special to me. I’d say these are my favourite few things besides the normal drumming gigs and recording work I do.

The Blood Brothers initiative will be making a lasting impression on people’s lives (through the Vrede Foundation). Which one person have you met who has made the most lasting impression on you?
When I was in One Day Remains we did a TV show with Herman and we ended up partying the night away. His vibe was super awesome to be around and we had some good laughs. One of the few jol nights I actually remember to be honest.
What can fans expect from this year’s show?
It is not as heavy as last year, but rather something different which I think is a great thing for the fans.
