Making Vriende with Francois van Coke

This month sees the AMP Events production Francois van Coke & Vriende (in association with kykNET and Jacaranda FM) happening at Sun Arena, Time Square in Pretoria. Standing tickets are now sold out, so you’ll need to hurry and buy your seated tickets if you want to catch what looks to be a phenomenal show. We caught up with the busy man himself to find out more about the concept, and friendships.

Coming up very soon is the ‘Francois van Coke & Vriende’ show, which features many artists and is quite a big production. How long has all the planning taken for it?

The idea has been around for a couple of years, but we started working on the actual event this year January.

And shortly after that is Blood Brothers – it seems quite a grueling schedule. When are you fitting in all these rehearsals, and how do you keep track of what you’re meant to be doing when?

Dude, you don’t even know half of it. I’m actually busy with two other projects in studio, unannounced things. And we are leaving for a little European tour with FOKOF in between. I am fitting in rehearsals when we get back. I try to switch off from time to time and just spend time with my family. But, sometimes at night all these things make me crazy when I try to sleep. I am busy, but at least I am making music and that makes me happier than doing anything else.

Talking about the EP ‘En Vriende’ now, the track that stands out the most for us is the one featuring Early B (Altyd lief vir jou). All the other artists you have worked with at some stage in the past, but this track is so different. It has a very Eminem vibe to it. Can you tell us how this colab came about?

Yeah, I love Early and think he is great. He actually approached me to do a track together for his album. He sent me a song he wanted me to feature on. I loved his raps, but did not really feel the music and wanted to make the chorus my own. Richard, Die Gevaar’s guitarist, wrote new music for the tune and I wrote a new chorus. I then loved the song so much that I asked Early if I could put the tune on my EP. And he said it is cool!

Keeping to the ‘friends’ theme. Fans get to see Francois the ‘muso persona’, but how would your best friends describe you?

You’d have to ask them. 😉

What, for you is the most important quality in a friend?

Trust.

You have a beautiful little toddler. Are you a strict dad or more of a friend?

I think I will always be a dad, but my wife is definitely the disciplinarian. I spend a lot of time on the road and she has to handle that department, because otherwise things will get out of hand. I love being a father, it is the greatest gift having a child and my daughter’s life is my biggest purpose.

She is growing up so fast! Does she sing along to any of your songs yet?

She has. But, she’s more into “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star” at the moment.

And lastly, we of course had to ask this one…who is your favourite character on Friends?

I dunno. Phoeboe is the only name I know from that show.

She is the only one you need to know! Best answer 🙂

Thanks again for the chat, we wish you the best of luck for all your new ventures, and we’ll see you at the show
