RECORDING STUDIOS’ 5TH BIRTHDAY – Interview with David Beretta Owens

Hear Yee! Recording Studios’ 5th Birthday Bash is an amazing celebration lined up on 25th June 2016. With a great lineup of bands kicking off at 12 noon to help us celebrate this milestone at the fabulous venue The Good Luck Bar, we are using our birthday event to raise money for deaf children who have never experienced the magic of music.

Get to know the bands

Over the coming weeks we’ll be interviewing members from each of the fabulous bands who are playing at our event…giving you a chance to get to know them a little better before the big day.

David Beretta Owens

Today we meet the energetic man who will be playing us two sets on the day. Opening the day’s events with a chilled solo set, and ending off the day a tad more hardcore as vocalist in the band PitVirus! \m/

Let’s roll with the questions then…

Tell us about your earliest memory of hearing music as a child

My Dad is a musician, so there was always music playing in our house. Everything from Frank Zappa and Jimi Hendrix to Nat King Cole and Julio Iglesias (the latter being my Mother’s influence). I also have a brother who is nine years older than me, so I got into things like The Police and Judas Priest when I was in Primary School. Music has been a part of my life as long as I remember.

All online ticket buyers stand a chance to win a pair of Black Faff customised Converse sneakers. If you were to design your own sneakers – what design would you go with?

I’ve always had a thing for tartan – would love a pair of tartan converse, with a rad skull on it… YOH!

You have been in the SA music industry for a very long time – what has been the highlight?

I’ve been fortunate to play in some really amazing bands with insanely talented people, headline many major festivals, support international bands, guest vocal with many of my friends on stage and on albums… it’s impossible to pick any one thing as a highlight… That said, my current band PitVirus is by far the best thing I have ever done. I’m more confident as a vocalist, the songs are powerful in delivery and meaningful in content. I feel the best is yet to come…

You have been in bands with one of Recording Studios’ founders – can you tell us how you two met? And what was your first impression of that guy?

Mr Gary Leicher! Gazz and I met in the 90’s alternative scene… Lithium and Seed played a number of gigs together. We definitely connected right away, he’s an easy guy to love. When I moved to Joburg in 1999 we played together in an experimental metal band called GiMP, and then later, N8ive.

Our aim with the money raised from this event is to help a child experience the magic of music. Can you recall a moment in your life when music struck you so profoundly that it changed you?

When I heard Prince’s “When Doves Cry” for the first time when I was 10 years old, I felt such excitement… I had never heard somebody scream like that, and I remember thinking I wanted to be able to do that. I started to look out for heavier, more alternative music, I was hooked.

What can fans expect from your set on the day?

I’m really amped to be able to kick off the birthday gig. I’ll be playing a variety of songs chosen from all the bands I have been in over the years. Mr Gary Leicher will be joining me to play some tracks from the N8ive days, and then another talent friend Mark Norrie (Dirty Royal) will join me for a Lithium track… it’s going to be awesome!

I’m really amped to be able to kick off the birthday gig….it’s going to be awesome!

Thanks for the interview – we are super excited to see you playing those old Lithium and N8ive tracks…and to see our very own Gazza on stage again!
